The Sims team has been making a lot of free updates lately, so now is a great time to download for the first time. To be honest, I probably wouldn't be playing the Sims without it. There is also a thriving custom content and modding scene. Kits don't add additional gameplay, AFAIK (haven't bought one), they're just bundles of items you might like to use in build-buy mode or when dressing your sims. For example, there is a knitting-themed stuff pack that lets you knit, a laundry-themed stuff pack that lets you do laundry, a vintage-glamour themed stuff pack that lets you have a butler.
